If you're a director of a company, registered Australian body, registered foreign company or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation, you need to apply for a director identification number (Director ID).
Why Do I Need A Director ID?
The Director ID requirement is part of new legislation introduced in November 2021 to prevent the use of fraudulent or false director identities, improve traceability and identify and eliminate director involvement in unlawful activity, such as illegal phoenix activity.
Phoenix activity occurs when a company is liquidated, wound up or abandoned to avoid paying its debts. This has negative impacts on employees, suppliers and subcontractors, competing businesses and the larger community via unpaid taxes.
You must apply for your Director ID by the deadlines listed below, as there are harsh penalties for non-compliance.
When Do I Have To Apply for a Director ID?
Your Director ID is something you'll apply for once and keep forever, (much like your Tax File Number). You'll maintain your Director Identification Number even if you cease to be a director, become a director of a different company, change your name, or move interstate/internationally.
You must apply for your Director ID by the dates listed below:
